This position serves under Recreation Therapy Section within the Sensory and Physical Rehabilitation Service at the VA Bedford Healthcare System. The Recreation Assistant organizes, coordinates, schedules and implements a program of therapeutic and free-choice recreation activities for designated patient groups that consist of young adults to geriatric patients with simple to complex psychiatric and/or physical disabilities. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Performs a full range of Therapeutic Recreation programs and interventions inclusive of recreation treatment modalities and general recreation (diversional) activities; Works with patients who have a variety of illnesses, diseases and/or disabling conditions with varying degrees of impairment; At times works independently with patients and responsible for minimizing all potential risks to patients and following safety policy/procedures; Develops specific activities and routines to maintain or improve patient's general state of physical and/or mental health based on the therapeutic recreation assessment completed by the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS); Strives to reduce mental and physical functional declines, maintaining the highest degree of self-determined and independence within limitations of a patient's disability; Provides feedback to the CTRS and/or other team members as appropriate; Solicits support and involvement of volunteers in specialized programs and events Drives and/or escorts patients to community activities; Assists individuals with physical disabilities in getting into and out of vehicles and around in the community environment; Assists in maintaining the Recreation Therapy Department activity areas, offices, and outdoor activity areas Planning and implementing recreation activities and events Understanding and following patient-specific precautions and preferences and may participate as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team(s). Responsible for the safety of patients at all times. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Sunday-Thursday from 8am-430pm. One later day per week may be required.
